Jerry has a very sweet personality and definitely wants to be with his people. He has not chewed on anything he wasn’t supposed to. He has not shown an interest in shoes or anything left on the floor. He did counter surf one time on the 2nd day but has not done it again. He gets a little excited in the car at first, but then does settle down and alternates between looking out the window and laying down. At the start of a car ride he does bark at dogs he sees, however, once we’re on the road for a few minutes, he does seem to settle down.
There are lots of new sounds for Jerry to process. He barked at first to anything he heard outside. That is settling down quite a bit. He has started to come out of his shell now that he’s been with us a couple of days. He is seeking attention and ear scratches, starting to do the lab lean. Such a sweetheart!
If you’re looking for an average size lab mix for a walking or hiking buddy, Jerry may just be the friend for you!
He did well with a bath and nail trim and had no issues with the technician when she trimmed his nails. She said he was very sweet.
Jerry continues to decompress and come out of his shell. He is very quick to learn the enrichment games we play and is food motivated. We have made good progress on loose leash walking, and are working on reactions when dogs bark first. The find it game helps immensely on walks to refocus him when this happens. Walking three times a day for about 20-30 minutes right now we have found is not too overstimulating for him. We took him for his first walk “in nature” by a river path and he did well.
He is happy to hang out in the backyard and slide down the grassy slope when we’re out with him. He follows us inside and likes to be near but doesn’t have to be underfoot.
He sleeps on a dog bed by our bed at night. We have not had any accidents in the house.
More info about Jerry
Other Dogs ▼
Jerry is initiating play more frequently with the resident dog and is starting to seem more at home. The shelter stated he did well with play groups. So far he has not shown interest in playing with the resident dog- Though he is still decompressing as we have only had him two days. On walks, he will bark at other dogs if they bark at him first. We are starting “look at that training,” and he is very interested in the treat pouch and is responding to cues. Jerry would likely be a great only dog or companion for another dog that isn't looking to play all day long.
Cats ▼
There are no cats in the home however, the shelter said he did not do well with cats. He has a high prey drive when on walks so believe he would want to chase cats.
Children ▼
There are no children in the home. He does have a sweet disposition so believe he would do well with children. He takes treats gently and eats his food calmly!
Leash ▼
He loves to go for walks!! It appears he has been on a leash before. He gets very excited when he sees the leash and goes to the door and sits down. He does need some work. At the start of the walk, he pulls out in front with very little sniffing. After about 10 minutes, he settles down and walks ahead slightly, but does weave back-and-forth.
Where I'm from ▼
Jerry came from a shelter in Joplin Missouri. He was a stray that was turned in by a citizen in early May.
