  • Foster Parent(s) Thanks to Jo & Paul for fostering Ellie!

Ellie is a real sweetheart and is always up for fun! She is a spunky girl that can’t help but make you laugh by doing zoomies, playing with her toys or just her diva personality. She very quickly bonds with the female human in her home. She will take attention from her foster dad, but doesn’t really seek him out. If her foster mom leaves the room, she’s coming with her. We are working on crate training. She likes to whine, whimper, and even howl when in the crate. We are working on leaving her alone and she seems more upset about being 2 feet away from her foster mom than actually being in the crate. It’s more a matter of being left behind. Our other dogs don’t help as she’s only attached to her foster mom. We are up to her being in the crate for 45min-1hr, Usually we are home and are just trying to get her used to spending time in the crate while we are walking around doing things. She’s getting a lot better about this already. She does eventually calm down and work on a Kong. She must be crated when alone as she is a real busybody and will put anything in her mouth and carry it around (and destroy it if given the opportunity). All dog toys get taken out of the bin daily. Shoes get carried around, clothes, literally anything she can find to drag about the house. Due to her being so attached to her foster mom, we’ve been having her spend time with her foster dad and general time away from her foster mom. Her adopters will need to be willing to work with her on this – it’s hard to not want to let her be clingy, but encouraging it will make it worse. Simple things like ignoring her when she gets let out of her crate (vs participating in the party she’s throwing and jumping around like crazy) will go a long way to help her be her best self. She’s getting settled in with her foster and is a totally different dog within just a few days. She does know “sit” but we haven’t tried anything else yet. Ellie has been on rest due to her heartworm so really hasn’t been able to get all of her energy out. Once she’s really able to run and play she will probably be a much more settled dog!

Since she is 35lbs, she is likely a mix but does look like a mini lab. Since she’s a mix, she is not going to have 100% lab characteristics.

More info about Ellie

Other Dogs ▼

She was found with 2 other dogs, was in a rescue with a lot of other dogs, and has been in a foster home with other dogs. She doesn't necessarily look to her foster siblings for any confidence. She has been on rest so hasn't been able to fully play but has shown some signs of wanting to play. She'd probably enjoy a doggie sibling.

Cats ▼

She was very interested in our cat. Got batted in the face once, and now gives her plenty of space. If your cat runs, she will chase. If your cat tells her who is the boss under no uncertain terms, she will show proper respect.

Children ▼

She's fairly unsure of sudden movements and loud noises so younger kids wouldn't be ideal for her. A busy house with a lot of people in and out (kids friends, etc) also probably wouldn't be ideal. But older quieter kids would be fine.

Leash ▼

She's all over the place on the leash. She zig zags and then runs from the back and does a Superman jump at the end of the leash. She only weighs 35lbs so is fairly easy to control, and is more of a tripping hazard as she's always right around your feet and legs.

Where I'm from ▼

Ellie is a rescue from Alabama. She was heartworm positive and received an abbreviated treatment protocol. She was on strict rest until 6/6 and will be able to introduce more activity going forward. She will need to be re-tested in 6-9 months and may still test positive. If she does, she will need further treatment and restricted activity which is hard for a young active girl!

We are a small group of dedicated volunteers who love dogs and work to find homes for Labs and Lab Mixes in need.
