Sprig is a beautiful full-bred lab and an extremely happy dog. He loves everyone he meets. He has gone through a change in residence and had a surgery in the last few days – and he is still a happy, fun dog.
Sprig came to us knowing a slew of commands- sit, stay, fetch, leave it, lay down (he was trained with the word “charge”), paws up, paws down, quiet, and a few more. He does not get on furniture (the only time was a few hours post-op and he was groggy). He does not counter surf or do anything bad in the house. He has not destroyed any toys. If he gets near any people food or anything we want him to avoid, he responds quickly to “leave it” or “no”.
Sprig sleeps in a crate at night. He has transitioned from an outside to an inside dog and is fine sleeping in a crate at night. He can also be crated when you are out during the day.
He’s a young boy and has some lab energy. If you tell him to “fetch” he will run around the yard to find a toy or ball and keep himself busy. He also enjoys running through his commands. Again, he is extremely well trained. If he is excited, he still responds well to any command to redirect the energy.
Sprig is recovering from surgery – removal of one eye and neuter. He has been a champ and is doing everything we ask him, including wearing a cone and taking post op meds.
Spring should be good as a solo dog or living with another dog. And he would love an active household. Even if its a few rounds of fetch in the yard a day.

Other Dogs ▼
Good. He lived with a dog in the past. We had him for 2 days prior to his surgery. He met my neighbor's small dog and did well. He also sniffed a few dogs on our walk. He shows zero aggression and if a dog is more than a few yards away, he totally ignores it when on the leash. When he gets within 5 feet of the dog and he knows we will stop, he approaches a bit quickly. We are working on slowing that down. If we tell him to "leave it" he redirects his attention and walks with us.
Cats ▼
Sprig has not been tested with cats. He has seen rabbits and squirrels on our walks and in the yard and does appear to have prey drive.
Children ▼
Sprig loves everybody and everything. That being said, he is big with a lot of energy. He's probably better suited for children over 10. He is well trained and does not jump up on people, but he might knock over a smaller child if he is really excited.
Leash ▼
Sprig has not spent much time walking on leash. He knows many commands, including heal, but needs reminding. He is excited for neighborhood walks as they are new to him. Sprig is quickly learning how to walk on a leash. He was mostly exercised in his yard or on open land. He pulls but has not forcibly lunged. He knows how to heel and does it well. When we need a break from the pulling, we ask him to "heel" and he comes right back to your side. He is very eager to please and should get better with time.
Where I'm from ▼
Sprig is a local owner surrender. He was bred and trained as a hunting dog, but unfortunately he developed cataracts (hereditary) and it progressed to glaucoma in his left eye. His eye couldn't be saved and was likely painful, so needed to be removed. Sprig still has good vision in his right eye, however, not good enough to continue hunting. His owner reached out to RMLR about rehoming. Sprig has lived most of his life in an outside kennel, so is learning the comforts of being a pampered house guest. Sprig was neutered and had his eye removed 7/28. He has a 2 week recovery head of him. Note: His photo is AI generated to show what he will likely look like once his eye is completely healed.
