Maggie aka Nessa

  • Sex Female
  • Size 70lbs
  • Fixed Yes
  • House Trained Yes
  • Foster Parent(s) Not Available

Nessa is an incredibly sweet, cuddly, and smart girl. When she feels safe with her people, she is the most relaxed, loving creature. When I walk by her, she lays on her back with her paws in the air to ask for rubs and when I stop, she puts a paw on my leg to ask for more. She is somewhat wary of new people, and when she meets someone new, we ask them to give her a few treats to make sure she knows they’re a friend. That being said, she warms up quickly. She is very quiet inside the house and rarely barks at people going by. She also doesn’t bark when people knock on the door or enter the house. Nessa would do best being alone or in a crate for meals and any treats like bully sticks or frozen yogurt cups (a favorite!).

Other Dogs ▼

Nessa has a doggie sister in our house that she is very attached to. They sleep together and they play nonstop. Nessa does play pretty hard, so new playmates would need to tolerate or enjoy her play stye. Our guess is that when given the chance, Nessa would establish this kind of relationship with other dogs as well. She has successfully played with a few other doggie friends - she just needs a slow and mindful introduction.

Children ▼

Nessa can at times be a sensitive dog, and the unpredictability of young children can be stressful for her, particularly loud noises and sudden movements. We think she'd do best in a home with no children or children over the age of 10.

Leash ▼

Nessa has mastered loose leash walking over the last year and does not pull most of the time. She does have prey drive towards squirrels and may lunge after them. Nessa also sometimes barks and lunges towards other dogs on leash but easily redirects with treats. When she sees another dog on a walk now, she will often check in with her human first. She is very treat motivated and a fast learner.

Where I'm from ▼

Nessa was found as a stray in Houston, TX. Our family met her while we were out walking in the neighborhood and we adopted her from RMLR. At that time, she had heartworms and had very little energy. We oversaw her treatment and now she is 100% heartworm free! Her energy skyrocketed after treatment, and she is a much happier creature. Over time, we've realized that our house is too busy for Nessa. We have two young children and LOTS of people coming in and out all the time and we believe she would be more successful and truly thrive in a quieter environment.

We are a small group of dedicated volunteers who love dogs and work to find homes for Labs and Lab Mixes in need.
