Tucker is a high energy, 1 year old boy who loves to play with his people and toys, will bark at his tail when chasing it, and loves nothing better than to zoom around the yard in search of squirrels while playing “catch me if you can”. He would do better with older children in the home due to his active, playful nature. He loves his people and follows them from room to room. He is curious and very smart, easily picking up tricks. He does requires physical and mental stimulation from puzzle toys, scent exploring walks or fetching balls, and practicing obedience commands, but also loves a good nap, belly rub or a quiet chew of his bone. As with most labs, he is very food motivated which is helpful in training or distracting him when he is playfully mischievous, like when he finds your slipper! He is crate trained and will sleep 8+ hours without a peep, is not destructive at all, and will lay at your feet during dinner with no begging. If you are looking for a faithful and adoring companion, Tucker is definitely worth the effort and will repay you with his unconditional love and loyalty.
More info about Tucker
Other Dogs ▼
Currently Tucker is very reactive to other dogs he sees while on leash or hears in the neighborhood. He gets very stressed out and has almost pulled over his fosters. He has successfully lived with another dog and done pretty good with reading body language, and taking a break if the other dog doesn't want to play. If a dog barks at him, he will bark back. If he is in a house with another dog, he would do well with one a similar size that likes to play, as getting chased by another dog is his favorite pastime. He does have mild resource guarding habits, where he gets upset if another dog gets fed before him, but is not defensive of his space, toys, or water. To successfully live with another dog, Tucker would likely need a slow introduction to help him calm down before saying hello.
Cats ▼
Tucker is still curious about cats. He has interacted with a 13 year old cat and wonders why she does not play with him like other dogs, but we are working on that.
Children ▼
Tucker must go to a home with kids older than 10 years. In interactions with children while walking he has been a good boy and only demanded pets from children he meets. We have not yet seen his interactions with children while off leash. He is pretty jumpy when he's excited, so could easily knock little ones down.
Leash ▼
Tucker can walk very well with a gentle leader with no pulling at all if there are no distractions around - for example, very early morning walks or walks in areas with no dog traffic. Tucker is reactive towards other dogs while on leash and through fences, and he is working with a trainer on positive reinforcement, controlling the environment and introducing distractions. We have seen enormous improvement. Tucker would thrive best with a family who is dedicated to continuing this training.
Where I'm from ▼
Tucker came to us from a shelter in Houston. He immediately began loving us and was an absolute gentleman from the start. Within 30 minutes of our meeting he was already getting a bath where unrestrained only one person successfully washed him. The biggest hurdle there was getting him dry as he really wanted to feel the blow dryer on his face. He is still a puppy at heart and so has plenty of energy for things like walks and fetch (still working on the return aspect of fetch), but he sleeps through the night and strives to impress his humans. He really wants a family that can love him, give him lots of attention and play (and food), and that will give him a warm, safe place to call home.
