Jon Jon (JJ) is a very intelligent, sweet young dog. He has become familiar and comfortable with the daily routines of his foster family. Some of his favorite activities are patrolling the backyard for rabbits and squirrels, belly rubs, fetch, wrestling with one of the resident dogs, walks/runs and napping or chewing on dog toys while his foster person works during the day – an exemplary office mate! He needs daily exercise, but not an excessive amount. He loves to play fetch and will play for however long the ball is thrown. At meal times, he sits and waits on cue until he gets the signal to begin eating. Because JJ is so excited about meal time, he now takes his meals in a puzzle bowl to help slow down his eating. JJ is a wonderful snuggle companion while watching TV or taking a nap. He enjoys sitting right next to everyone on the couches but will also go lay down on the floor or his favorite chair by the window in the other room if denied access to the couch. JJ has graduated to sleeping in a big kennel at night in a room all to himself! He would happily sleep with humans in their bed if invited though. He does well in the kennel when we are not home, enjoying a treat filled Kong and then a nap until we return. On occasion, JJ has spent time in the sunroom when the people are not home and does really well. He gets a little more freedom when he demonstrates he can handle it. Jon Jon is very responsive to “ah ah” which is his signal to stop what he is doing. He is extremely treat-motivated, which has helped with his leash training and overall refinement of his manners. JJ does well in cars too. He is no longer the over-excited bouncy dog that he was when he arrived last October. He has matured into a young dog who is working really hard to be the best version of himself. He will need someone to continue with him on his journey to harness his big emotions when he encounters stressful situations. In return he will give unconditional love and companionship, and will always be the happiest being in the room!
Thank you to Wag Your Tail Photography for taking photos of friendly Jon Jon!

Other Dogs ▼
Introductions to new dogs need to be slow and supervised on leashes until both dogs decide they can be friends. He is not bashful at all and can overwhelm the other dog initially. He tends to match the energy levels of the dogs around him. If the dogs are quiet and calm, JJ is quiet and calm. If the dogs are wound up, JJ will get wound up too. Once JJ is friends with another dog, he loves to play!
Cats ▼
The shelter noted he should not be a home with cats, most likely due to his strong prey drive.
Children ▼
He gets along great with the teenagers in the house. He adores all of their friends when they come to the house - eager to meet them all. Because of his size and excitement levels, small children are not recommended.
Leash ▼
JJ has now met with two professional trainers - one taking him in as a board and train who worked extensively on his high emotional levels while on the leash. JJ has done very well since returning to the foster home. JJ has another new harness that works well on walks, alternating with the gentle leader when needed. Both JJ and his foster person have learned skills to use when on walks to help reduce escalation of his emotions, engage JJ with his person, and move through high stress situations better.
Where I'm from ▼
Jon Jon was picked up as a stray in Lawrence, Kansas and spent over 3 months in the shelter before coming to CO. The shelter noticed a decline in his mental health the longer he stayed in the shelter. At that point they reached out to rescue groups to place him in a foster home.
