  • Foster Parent(s) Thanks to Jane and Martin for being great fosters to Brownie!

Brownie is a sweet dog. She will melt into you when petted in her favorite spots. She is hesitant to meet new people for about 5 seconds. Once petted, she wants more and usually rolls onto her back for a belly rub.

She has a lot of energy in the morning. We usually take her for a short walk before breakfast, play about 5-10 minutes of fetch post breakfast, then read while she plays with her ball and toys. She can really entertain herself. We also take her on one long afternoon walk and a late evening walk.

Brownie is still settling in and gaining confidence. She sleeps in a kennel and is also left in the kennel when we leave the house during the day. We have not done that for more than an hour. During the day. when we are at home, she has a section of the couch on the blanket. She stays in her spot. If you sit next to her, she will rest her head in your lap.

Brownie loves her food. She is very excited at mealtime and likes to try to steal stuff from the kitchen counter when we are not paying attention. If we are cooking or eating, she does not beg and lays at our feet. The excitement is solely at doggie mealtime. We are working on sitting before we place her bowl down. and watching her while she is in the kitchen.

As far as obedience training, she is learning, sit, down, and stay. Brownie still has some puppy in her. She occasionally grabs something she shouldn’t (sock, a pine cone), but appears to do it to be chased. She hasn’t destroyed or chewed anything in the house (but has not been unattended). And if she collects an object, she stores in in her kennel. She is responsive to the word “No” and that usually interrupts any unwanted or silly behavior.

Brownie appears to be house trained. She had two accidents since arriving last week and an upset stomach, which is typical of dogs adjusting to life in a home. Once she found her spot in the yard and her tummy recovered, she has been fine. She does not scratch or whine at the back door, so we really watch her to see when she moves in that direction so we can let her out. She will not go while on leash, so we make sure she goes in the yard before any long walks.

More info about Brownie

Other Dogs ▼

She passes dogs easily on the leash. We have stopped to sniff a few dogs that seem calm, and she enjoys that. We will introduce her to friendly dogs in the near future.

Cats ▼

Not sure - we have seen two cats on recent walks. She stays still on the leash and the cats approach her. She does not show any aggression, but she is playfully curious.

Children ▼

She has not been around children under the age of 12.

Leash ▼

Brownie walks well on the leash and harness. She pulls slightly when she sees a squirrel, but is very manageable due to her size. She walks half a mile in an urban environment to get to a park. She is learning to sit and wait at every street corner. In the park, she likes to stop and smell the grass and trees, which helps slow her pace.

Where I'm from ▼

Brownie arrived from Missouri on April 1st. We do not have a lot of detail. Just know that she was surrendered and she was spayed in March.

We are a small group of dedicated volunteers who love dogs and work to find homes for Labs and Lab Mixes in need.
