Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue September 2010 Newsletter

It's been a rough first week of September for many Coloradians affected by the Boulder fire. For those unaware, our local community has been ravaged this past week by the Four Mile Canyon Fire. Over 150 homes have burnt to the ground and many families have been displaced. The fire has destroyed more homes than any other wildfire in Colorado history.

Many thanks to all the firefighters who are working overtime to battle this blaze! Our hearts swell seeing all the outpouring of the community to help these families and all the animals affected by this horrible event. And we're amazed at some of the heroic stories emerging from this event. There are many outlets for you to donate and volunteer to help the animals of these evacuated families (you can find out how to donate below by clicking on the links)

Camp Bow Wow in Boulder is accepting donations to help the pets affected by the fire.

The Longmont Humane Society and the Boulder Humane Society have opened their doors for temporary housing for animals displaced by the fire. Both shelters have taken in over 50 animals each and are offering free care to those animals until their owners can care for them again. They need supplies and food!

You can also text PETS to 50555 to give $10 to Boulder Humane Society.

Dog of the Month: Archie

Hi, there! I’m Archie! Yes, it’s true that I suffered a life of neglect in the past, but
thankfully, Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue has stepped in, and is preparing me for a well
deserved life of happiness in the future! I was found wandering as a stray, and was
extremely skinny and had cuts and scrapes that are now rapidly healing as I receive TLC
from my foster home. You see, I had one more obstacle that made my life as a wanderer
even more challenging- I can’t see! Yep! That’s right. I’m blind! RMLR took me to see a
doggy ophthalmologist (eye doctor), but unfortunately, my blindness is not correctable as I have retinal disease. But don’t you worry- I don’t let that slow me down one bit! I’m a lab, after all, and we labs have “can do!” attitudes! I still go jogging with my foster mom, and it’s incredible to watch me compensate for my lack of sight by using my other senses.
My ability to make my way in this world would be so much easier if I had a forever home and family where I could be familiar with my surroundings, and have people I trusted to guide me a bit. I’ll need a home where my people have lots of time to keep me safe while I become acquainted with my new home (for example, stairs could be a danger if I’m not watched and/or properly acquainted with them). With just a bit of extra time, patience, and love, I can still do all the active, fun stuff any lab could do (including stairs, as long as my family is sure I know where they are!), and I just might develop an even closer bond to my people! So if you think you have an extra special place in your home and your heart, please come visit me- I’m sure I’ll win ya over!

You can find out more about Archie & other adoptable dogs on our website.

Pet Fire Safety Tips

Pet Proof the Home - Take a walk around your home and look for areas where pets might start fires inadvertently, such as the stove knobs, loose wires and other potential hazards.

Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from spaces where they can get trapped, especially if there are any potential fire hazards when you are away from home, for example, knocking over a hot lamp onto a dry carpet.

Extinguish Open Flames - Pets are naturally curious and will investigate almost anything that has a scent. This includes your oven, a candle, and even your fireplace. Do not leave pets unattended around open flames and make sure to properly extinguish fires before leaving your home.

Have an escape route and plan - Keep collars and leashes near your front or back door (whichever you use more frequently or even at both) in case you have to evacuate quickly with your pet or firefighters need to rescue your pet.

Affix a Pet Alert Window Sticker - Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the sticker to a front window where it can be easily found by emergency responders. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. You can obtain a free window cling by going to www.adt.com/pets, or from the AKC (www.akc.org) and the ASPCA (www.aspca.org).

Since Pets Left Alone Can't Escape a Burning Home - Consider using monitored smoke detectors that are connected to an emergency response center with people on hand who can call the fire department in your absence.

Keep Your Information Updated - Firefighters are familiar with pet alert window stickers so keep the number of pets listed on them updated. Knowing the accurate number of pets in the house aids rescuers in finding all of your pets.

Success Story of the Month: Maybel

Hi folks!
Carrie told me to send out pictures of Grace (fma as "Maybel") to the alias.
I'm the volunteer transporter who picked up little Maybel at Carrie's to take her to see Dr. Dodge. She had nasty injuries to her front shoulder soft tissue and muscles from chains and dog bites, was limping and in a lot of pain. Long story short, I ended up taking her from Dr. Dodge's back home to foster in a little quieter environment till she had the chance to mend.
She's a dear, sweet little wild thing now, and we totally love her. One would never guess that she was in such a bad state only a week ago — she loves playing in the snow, taking walks with us, and watches Angus's every move to learn from him (when she's not terrorizing him).
Special thanks to Carrie and Laura for calling me to see if I could help transport her to the vet — we're lucky we found each other!

Best,
Heidi (I may be a foster "failure," but I'm happy to continue as a transporter!!)

Thank you to Petango.com for their call for more foster homes!

Upcoming Events

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH
9:00AM – 3:00PM
Broomfield Dog Daze at the Bay
250 Lamar Street
Broomfield, CO 80020

It’s a day gone to the dogs! Bring your dog down to the Bay for a day of excitement just for dogs. Fido can jump and play in the summer heat, while coolin’ off with a dip in the pool.
The city of Broomfield is so generous to allow RMLR a booth at the event. Last year was not the nicest, rain and cold, but the foster dogs loved it and that’s all that counts.

Just a little reminder, the activity is for the dogs and does not include owners to be in the pool. Pre-registration is preferred to guarantee space. Please call 303-464-5501 to pre-register!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH
8:00AM – 12:00PM
2ND Annual K-9’s Against Cancer
5k/1mile Fun Run
Stapleton’s Central Park
www.bowwowbuddies.com
This is a fabulous event that raises money for animal cancer research. Unfortunately, so many labs are lost to cancer each year and anything we can do to help is appreciated. We participated last year in the blowing snow, but once again – the dogs had a great time. There’s an area called Rescue Roundup for all the animal rescue booths.
Not only is this a wonderful publicity event, but we bring foster dogs and they enjoy all the attention!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH
9:00AM – 1:00PM
Old South Pearl Street Farmer’s Market
Pet Fair
1500 block of S. Pearl b/w Iowa and Florida
Denver, CO 80210
The Old South Pearl Farmer's Market is full of vendors and food and fun! The original Pet Fair date in June was rainy, freezing, and miserable but the dogs didn’t seem to care. Since turnout was low, they want to host another rescue event.
The neighborhood (which is where I live) is extremely dog friendly and I see labs every day walking with their owners. We'll have a booth with information, merchandise, and foster dogs up for adoption.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2ND
5:00PM – 7:00PM
Wine Tasting and Silent Auction Fundraiser
The Empty Bottle
1886 S. Pearl Street
Denver, CO 80210
PLEASE SAVE THE DATE!!
We encourage you to join us for a wine tasting and silent auction fundraiser. We are partnering with Front Range German Shepherd Rescue. There are so many wonderful dogs looking for our help. All proceeds go directly to the dogs and we hope that you have a great time while you're supporting the cause. We will also have a small silent auction and already have donation commitments from DirectTV, Kong Company, Merrick, and Nylabone, just to name a few. The wine shop will donate 10% of the wine purchased that night after the tasting back to the two rescues. We look forward to seeing you. For more information about this event please visit our website!

RMLR: Behind the Scenes!

We'd like to welcome all our new volunteers and newest board members to the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue. Welcome to our newest board members Christy, Kari and Jessica!

And a big thank you to all our great volunteers! Your hours of dedication do not go unnoticed.

The Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue now has over 150 volunteers - ranging from people that work events, make phone calls, work transports, keep our books, run dogs to vet appointments and fosters!

Everyone with Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue are all unpaid volunteers, even our board members, so we are always looking for more help.  We understand that, like ourselves, families and paying jobs sometimes have to come first so any free time you have to offer to the dogs means so much!  Our biggest need is transports, fostering and helping us review applications for adoption.  We need people to conduct phone interviews and are always looking for people to help with events and occassionally doing home visits for potential adopters.  Even though the dogs give so much gratification, we also try and make our group fun to work with, so we hope you will come join us in saving so many more well deserving dogs!!!

If you are interested in volunteering in any way please email us at rockymountainlabrescue@gmail.com Thank you!!!!
