Newsletter #0004 05.01.08

It's May 1st... and it's snowing

I thought we were done with the snow, but I guess good old Mother Nature still has some in store for Colorado! Hope everyone had a great April and Spring Break, if you were lucky enough to have one! We've been as busy as ever rescuing labs from across the country. Last month we successfully adopted out 13 dogs (including one to New Mexico!). We had some very successful events - thank you to Colorado Canines for hosting a fundraising Doggie Wash and thanks to Paw-Wares for letting us join them for their Grand Opening last saturday! As always, thank you to and congratulations to all adoptive families on the new family member. And thank you to all our volunteers, we (and the dogs) appreciate everything you do to help out. No task is too small! We're gearing up for a great month *cross your paws* that it's as successful as the past months have been.

Dog of the Month: Isabella

Miss Isabella has been with Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue since 2007 (remember all the way back then?!) She was at a great foster home in Oklahoma until mid-April when she finally arrived in Colorado. We're so happy she's finally here. Isabella is 11 months old, a black lab/border colllie mix (we think). She LOVES to run. This little girl weighs in at about 30 lbs (she's definitely on the small side) and she's a sweetheart. She could be your perfect lap-lab! If you're interested in Isabella or one of our other Adoptable Dogs, please visit our website and fill out an Application.

Events

May is going to be busy, busy, busy for RMLR. Not only do we have our normal vet appointments, adoptions, phone calls and everything else to do - but we're hosting our own 5K! This event is being hosted by 12 Centaurus High School Marketing and DECA members who are working with us! Come not only support the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue, but help support Centaurus High School too! A percentage of the money raised will be returned in the form of a scholarship to the students at Centaurus High School.

May 10th: from 8AM until Noon we will be at the finish line of the High Line Canal 5K. We will have a booth set up with adoptable dogs and information about the rescue!

May 10th: from 11AM until 2PM we will be at the PetCo in Northglenn. We'll have adoptable dogs and information about the rescue!

May 18th: is the big day!! Our own Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Doggie Dash 5K! Invite everyone you know to come run, walk, jog, or dash their way to the finish line of our 5K. It is a $26 entry fee that includes a tshirt, goodie bag, and you can bring 2 canine friends to participate with you! It will be held at Caranci Park in Louisville, CO and starts at 8:30AM. If you don't want to run the 5K join us at the finish line for freebies, vendors, doggie massages and paw-painting! There will be prizes awarded for a variety of categories including race winner and look-a-like owner/pet combo! Enter to run at www.active.com - it will be a great time and the funds go to help out the dogs of the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue! If you have time to give - we will be needing many volunteers for all sorts of jobs on this day. If you're interested in volunteering for this event please email us and let us know!

Volunteering

Help! Help! Help! We are in desperate need of some friendly, fun, ambitious people with spare time on their paws (er, hands). We have recently exhausted our boarding facilities and would love if anybody is interested in fostering a sweet dog, to please Apply to Foster today! Fostering can be a great way to learn if you or your family is ready for a dog, or just a great way to provide a fantastic lab with a life outside of shelter walls. We have done a great job with the 50+ labs we have saved to date, but we turn away several dogs daily. The more foster homes we can recruit, the more dogs escape bad shelters across the states. Can't foster? - no problem! We could also use your help with assistance with transports, home visits, phone interviews, and events.

With the 5K Doggie Dash on May 18th - we need more support than ever! For that date specifically we need help with processing registrations, putting together goodie bags, passing out tshirts, walking dogs that are available for adoption, assistance with the paw-paintnig station, help along the raceway, and people to stick around for teardown/cleanup. If you know of anyone who needs service hours for school or something else, or just loves dogs and wants to lend a helping hand - please email us, we could use your help!

Call for Black Dogs

For some reason unknown, black dogs have a very hard time getting adopted. This issue isn't limited to labs specifically or even to the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue, but we see it all the time. These dogs are just as sweet and just as deserving as yellows and chocolates. Here are a couple websites and articles about the issue. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23472518/
