Fundraising Days of May
How about that April weather? Snow storm after snow storm here in the Denver metro area! Hopefully we start making up for it with some gorgeous weather in May!
April was a busy busy month for us at the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue. We successful adopted out 14 dogs - including TRANCE! Trance had been with RMLR since last August. A big congratulations to Trance and his new forever family!
May is going to be a fun, exciting and hopefully fundraisingful month! We have our 2nd Annual Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Run 5K on May 17th - which will hopefully help us pay for over $7,000 in orthapedic surgeries that we need for three of our lab girls. Mona, Macee and Hailey. We all know times are very tough for people right now, but if you have any extra funds and are looking for a place or rescue to donate them to we are officially a 501c3 non-profit and all donations are tax deductible. Also none of us make a dime at this so we are all non-salaried. Every penny goes right back to these 3 beautiful girls and their surgeries.

Hailey after her leg surgery - Doesn't she just look adorable!

Here is Miss Macee. She needs rear leg surgery from a trama she experienced in her past.
|

Mona has already found her forever family - however RMLR is still going to pay for her double rear leg surgery!

If you'd like to donate to help these three ladies - visit our website! Thank you!

May Dog of the Month: Koda
We are looking for a very special family to be the perfect fit with our guy Koda. As you can see he has the head of a teddy bear and the heart to go with it. He has recently come from a family full of six warm bubbly children of all ages that he adored and of course they completely adored him in return. Due to Koda's keen prey drive we are looking for a dog savvy family that is willing and able to offer Koda the time, training and love he needs to keep him happy and safe. We are looking for a family with strong human "pack leaders." Koda is a absolutely beautiful guy with a heart full of gold but unfortunately he doesn't understand his own strength. He is potty trained and responds well to "NO." As much as he loves children of all ages he needs to be adopted into a family with older children who have no problem taking the lead and making him their one and only canine. This smart guy has a knack for McGyvering his way out of the backyard so he does need a secure 5 foot or taller fence. With one look in those soft brown eyes you can tell Koda is an absolute love. Now it is our turn to help him find the perfect family who has the right amount of training to control his strength but is governed more importantly with the love to welcome this big guy into their hearts!

Get More from Your Game of Fetch
We all know that teaching your dog commands is very valuable. It makes them smarter, well behaved, and tired at the end of the day!! Here are a few tips to tie commands into your average game of fetch:
1. Always make your dog work for the ball! Make them do several commands. (down-stays are great!) BEFORE you throw the ball. This can also be effective for those persistent dogs who beg to come in, and beg to go outside all day long. Make them work for what they want, no matter what!
2. Put a command to what they are doing. After you have done some commands, and you are about to throw the ball, say "fetch", then throw. As they are coming back with the ball in their mouth, say "Fido, come", so automatically they are associating the word "come" with running towards you. When they drop the ball at your feet, put the "drop it" command to that action.
3. Bored with the tennis ball? Try a rope toy or Kong. Kongs are great b/c you throw them, and bounce in all different directions. The dog really has to work in order to retrieve it!
4. Try a game of 2- ball (or whatever toy) fetch. As the dog is running towards you with the ball, tease them with the 2nd ball, so they drop the 1st toy, and focus on toy #2. REALLY makes them think!
Fetch is a great bonding experience for you & your dog. And its a great way to drain some of that energy!! If you follow these tips, you will be sure to make your dog smarter & get some great exercise!! (Thank you to Ted Terroux for some great tips!) |
