Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue June Newsletter 06.03.2008

Summer is here!

Welcome June! Welcome summer, pools, baseball games, camping, hiking, grille outs and hot cars! That’s right folks – it’s time to start being aware and be careful about leaving dogs in cars. Please avoid leaving your furry friends in your car during these summer months at all costs! Cars can heat up remarkably fast and send your pup into a heat stroke that will need immediate vet attention. Here’s a link from the United States SPCA about leaving dogs in cars. Cool It! Summer's Heat Can Be Deadly for Your Pet

Hope everyone enjoyed their month of May! Man, were we busy! I think at one point we had over 70 active applications in our system – plus we saved 25 dogs this past month! Incredible! Our first annual Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue 5K Doggie Dash was a huge success. Our goal was to have 100 runners. We surpassed that on race day with our day-of-race registers – totaling 133 runners! We had some amazing sponsors that made our event and goodie bags pretty awesome. Take a look at some photos from the event, race results and our huge list of sponsors on our website. Finally, we raised over $4,000! Part of that we’re donating to Centaurus High School in the form of a scholarship as a big THANK YOU for all their organization and planning hours that they put into this event.

Volunteering

The 5K helped us gain some exposure for potential adopters and volunteers. Thank you so much to our old and new volunteers for taking some of your time and giving it to these great dogs in need. If you’d like to volunteer – we’d always love your help. There are many things we could use your help with – from fostering and events to transports and home visits! There is always something going on. Email us and explain what you're interested in helping out with and we'll hook you up!

Fostering

Our organization is always in need of foster homes. The more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save. We need people who can offer their homes as temporary residences for our dogs until permanent owners can be found. As a foster care volunteer, not only will you be providing a dog with the 1-on-1 attention it so desperately craves, you will be giving yourself a chance to see what it would be like to have a dog companion without the permanent commitment. If this is something that you would like to do, please contact us for more information or fill out a foster application and get the process started today!

Fundraisers

Right now we're working on a big FUNdraiser! In need of a vacation? Love the lights of the Vegas strip? We might have something that interests you! A very nice rescue woman donated a week at her time share on the Vegas Strip to us to raffle off as a fundraiser. Tickets are $10 for 1 and $20 for 3. Details about the time share, the raffle and how to purchase your tickets are all located HERE on our website.

Pup of the Month

Sadie Mae is Miss June here at RMLR. Sadie came to us from a wonderful volunteer in Kansas that saved her from a shelter. She is an older dog, approximately 6 years old. She is the victim of a backyard breeder, having had at least 8 litters of puppies. Her breasts show the work that they’ve done – but it hasn’t affected her personality at all.

Sadie is a companion dog. She would do very well with someone that could be with her most of the day. She has congenital cataracts that has deemed her mostly blind. She has make her way around during the day just fine, but in the evening she needs a little assistance. If she spends 24 hours in a home she is very functional using just her ears and nose. You’ll have to be patient with her when going new places because she has a little hesitation – but she is always a happy girl!

Sadie deserves the best home a dog can get! She is doing so well in her foster home. She gets along with anyone and everything (cats, dogs, kids, etc.) If you are interested, check her out on our website for more information and fill out an application today!
