Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue June Newsletter 06.09
Hot Diggity Dog
Three cheers for a great May! We pulled off one great Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Run 5K on May 17th! We had a great turn out, with over 210 runners! If you attended the event, thank you so much for coming out. We hope you had a fabolous time! We sure did! If you didn't make it out that day, check out all the great pictures on the website, and compare your running times to the top finishers on our website HERE.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers that came out that day to help out. A BIG thank you to all the Centaurus High School students who came out to volunteer that morning. Five percent of the profits of the race will be donated to CHS Marketing and DECA for their scholarship fund. Another thank you out to all the sponsors and vendors. Without any single one of you, the event wouldn't have been as great or as successful.
May was successful in other areas as well. We adopted out 11 gorgeous pups to their new forever families! We also paid for 3 intensive surgeries. If you read last month's newsletter, you might have seen that Mona, Macee and Hailey all needed orthapedic surgeries. Between some generous donations and the 5K, we raised enough money to pay the surgery bills and all three girls are doing splendidly in their new forever homes!

New Business
It's that time of year, to re-elect board members for the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue. As a public non-profit, we hold a yearly public nomination and election process to determine our board members. We have one president, one vice president, one secretary, one treasurer and three members at large. Members need to be an active volunteer with the rescue and to have been an active volunteer for at least 6 months. The president must have at least 1 year of active volunteering with the rescue (and be a currently active volunteer). (check our website for more details)
We are accepting nominations for the 2009-2010 board. Nominations will be submitted via email by July 4th 2009. Please send an email to rockymountainlabrescue@gmail.com with your name, your nominee's name, emails, phone numbers, and position nominating for. Nominees will be contacted. All nominees have the opportunity to accept or decline their nomination. All volunteers, nominees and public are invited to attend our August board meeting (exact date to be announced later/it wil be posted on our website) to vote for the next year's board. All nominees must be present. Board members are expected to be able to attend 80% of RMLR meetings (we have monthly meetings).

Letter to the Editor
Dear RMLR,
Leo Peers here (formerly Asher). I am doing quite well - but we need to talk about my humans. They need better training. They are learning - but they don't leave food on the counters nearly often enough. And the garbage cans are all out of reach now. And I'm always hungry - I only get elk steak once a week or so. And one of my humans tries to "work" from home rather than rub my tummy. And I barely ever get outside - I only get exercise 3-4 times per day. Please tell them that we really ought to spend more time in the mountains - the weekends are nice, but a dog needs to go skiing more than 2 days a week. But other than that, I think my humans are acceptable.
I still do sleep a lot - especially if I'm wet or muddy - that's when my favorite spot is on my human's bed or the couch. I really enjoyed my obedience class because I got fed every 20 seconds. But sometimes other dogs would get food instead of me! Not fair!
I like it when I go running or hiking - especially with my friend Tea. I've been cross country and skate-skiing several times, mountain snow-biking with my human in February (what was he thinking?), and I go rock climbing with my humans too. I learned how to swim 2 weeks ago. Apparently I am also the talk of the town on this thing called "facebook".
Thank you for rescuing me. I've enclosed a few pictures of yours truly so that you can recognize me on the trails. - Leo
Dear Leo
To be honest, your humans sound great. Think they'd be interested in adopting a human as well?
Sincerely - Editor

Meet Buddy! During one of our events at Petsmart, Buddy was found with his owners that were giving him away for free. One of our volunteers couldn't stand the thought of what type of home Buddy would go to if GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE, so we took him into our Lab rescue!! The father bought him for his daughter who loved Border Collies but ended up being allergic to them, so they ended up at Petsmart giving him away. They said that they have been working on sit, lay and stay with him. SOOOO CUTE!!!
Buddy is a super sweet boy who is tolerant even with kids that drag him around Petsmart!! He is a 6 month old Border Collie so will need an owner that understands their temperament and need to always have a job. They are smart dogs and make wonderful pets!! He's pretty much housetrained, but needs to go out frequently, although he sleeps through the night in his crate without a single peep. Loves to play constantly with his resident foster dog friend or people of any age. But he will gladly play with himself if someone isn't available. He seems to enjoy having a variety of toys from which to choose, and if none are available, a sock or a slipper will do for a rousing game of keep away! He shows promise to learn to fetch. He's defniately smart and learns things, good and bad, quickly. Fortunately, he doesn't seem to be learning his foster family's dog's favorite skill of barking; he actually runs into the house if the foster-dog is barking at something outside. He is the epitome of a sweet and inquisitive puppy!
For more information about Buddy, or our other precious adoptable pups, look at our Adopting Page on our website!

Success Story of the Month: Payton (now Sugar)
We loved seeing all of the RMLR Rescued Dogs that came out for the 5K! It's so great to see them happy and loving their new lives! It's like watching your kids grow up and succeed (dorky? maybe, but we're proud rescue/foster parents!)
This month's success story highlight is from a yellow lab girl we got from a high-kill shelter in Dodge City, Kansas named Payton. She was very sweet and just needed a forever family. You can see from her before and after pictures - that we got the right match!
FROM THE NEW FAMILY:
I just wanted to email a few pictures of Sugar (Payton) for you guys to see. Hard to believe we have had her a month now!!! It has gone by very quickly, and the kids can't remember life before she was here!!! She plays very hard with them in the back yard in the mornings and evenings, and naps with the 3 yr old every afternoon for 3 hours!!! She has been wonderful and we are working hard to train her so we can all enjoy her even more. She has picked up quite a few commands and is walking on a leash without tugging. She has been just wonderful!! Thanks to you both for all you did to help us adopt her!! Enjoy the pictures and know she gets loved on for hours and hours and hours every day!!!
Thanks for everything!!!
Kristi and gang

The Run Down
The race went great! Our top finisher, Ross Bryant, finished with his dog in just 18:11!!! Congrats Ross! Our second place winner was Derek Stetson, a Centaurus High School student, out to run the race and support his classmates that were volunteering! He finished in just 18:52! Our first woman finisher was Tami Kochen, with a time of 20:34!
The event was a fantastic family event! Everyone brought the kids and the dogs and we all had a great time!
Once again thank you to our super sponsors and vendors that came out, provided incredible raffle prizes and food for the race!
NOTICE: If you signed up to run on Active.com and DID NOT show up the day of the race AND would still like your race tshirt, please come pick it up. People can pick up their shirts on Friday June 6th from 4-6 or Monday June 8th from 4-6 at 13288 Lost Lake Way, Broomfield 80020. If neither of those times works, please email Amy @ rockymountainlabrescue@gmail.com and work out a time that works for both of you.
ALSO we still have running skirts for sale from Skirt Sports. Skirt Sports was a great race sponsor this year and donated a TON of running skirts for sale. We still have some for sale. They have been discounted. All running skirts from skirt sports are now only $25! This is way cheaper than you'll find them in stores, PLUS all the proceeds from the sale of these skirts go directly to the rescue and saving more dogs! So buy a skirt, exercise and look super cute - WHILE helping save some pups! We have limited sizes available still so either email us about availability, or check out the website for more info.
A big thanks to Dan Rieber, for taking some great race shots! Visit his website to order shots of you and your pup running the 2nd Annual Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Run 5K!
