July 2009 Newsletter

Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Newsletter 07.09

You're A Grand Old Lab...

...you're a high flying, um, er, flag. Happy July 4th everyone! It's shaping up to be a great weekend to spend with the family, the pups, have a cookout, enjoy the fireworks and celebrate FUReedom! We wish everyone a safe and fun holiday weekend! (Now get out there and do some yard work!)

June was a good month for the pups and people of RMLR. We found 16 successful forever families! Including one for our very first Border Collie (Buddy) and one for our Rhodesian Ridgeback (Casey). We know that we call ourselves a lab rescue... but every once in awhile, we get other cute adorable eyes that look at us and tug at our heart strings until we can't say no! Either way, we're very happy to have had the opportunity to save these two fellas, and the other 14 of June 2009. We can't wait to hear from updates from the new families about how they celebrated the Independance Day weekend!!

Dog of the Month: Lava

June saw THREE dogs of the month get adopted out! Way to go June!

July will hopefully see the same fate. Meet Lava!

Summer is here! There are mountains to be hiked, lakes to be swam and balls to be fetched!!! At just a little over one Lava is full of puppy energy! He is looking for a avid runner or outdoors person/family to match his energetic personality. With a strong lean athletic build Lava makes the perfect companion for all your outdoor excursions. With his loving personality he relishes the attention and love from his people. He would do best with another youngish canine companion to play with and a family that understands that he is still just a pup! Lava has been known to be way too curious and dare I say annoying to both the bovine and feline sort. We are eager to find the active family looking for a little canine inspiration to run loyally by their side!

Check out more information about Lava and our other Labs for Adoption under Adopting.

A Call for Foster Parents

Attention potential foster family:

Daily, we are forced to turn away great dogs, mostly from high risk shelters, because we don't have enough foster homes to accommodate them.  We feel that many of the dogs would be highly adoptable and would probably be placed quickly, but without the foster openings we must turn them away.

Please consider fostering, even if only for one time.  Maybe you could only do it for a few nights.  Whatever you could do, we would appreciate it.  If you have friends that are thinking about getting a dog, fostering would be a good first step for them.  If you know people love dogs but travel too much or don't want to make a long term commitment,  fostering might be a very satisfying alternative.

So many dogs are in jeopardy right now because people are losing their jobs and their homes.  Please consider fostering, and please help us to come up with ideas for getting new foster homes.

If you are interested in fostering, please fill out an application on our website. Being a foster parent is a richly rewarding experience. You're an integral part in saving a dog's life. It's also an emotional, often difficult experience that isn't for everyone - but for those that can do it, it's an experience that won't soon be forgotten. Fostering a pet gives them a chance to find a happy, permanent home when they otherwise might not have had that chance.

Please fill out a fostering application today on our website and give one of these pups a second chance!

Needs Extra Special Help

We would like to introduce everyone to Koda! If you are familiar with RMLR, you might recognize his face.

He is a very large dog, about 100 lbs and very strong. We think he maybe a Labrador Rottweiler mix. Koda has been adopted out twice, and returned twice for aggression issues with other dogs. Due to his size, strength and aggression issues we have not been able to adopt him out. We have paid for him to be in training and are paying for him to be in a pet kennel since we do not have any foster available to work with him.

He is a beautiful healthy dog that has lived with children of various ages (one family had 6 children) and he has never shown any aggression to people or children. He seems protective of his humans. He has also lived with other dogs and done fine with them. He is just picky with his dog friends.

We are a small volunteer run rescue and have very limited resources and funds. We have spent a lot of money on Koda, between working with a trainer and paying to board him. We do not have the means to work with him in order to safely adopt him out. He is a beautiful dog that we believe can be adoptable. He is just in need of a very STRONG leader, a lot of training and maybe even some dog-socialization rehabilitation.

We are looking for possibly a trainer, another rescue with more resources or a sanctuary that might be able to help Koda. Or donations for us to be able to continue to help him as best we can. We're trying our hardest - but our resources just seem to be running out!

Success Story of the Month: Trapper

It's not very often a dog gets adopted out TWICE in one month. Mister Trapper did this past month - and it looks like the second time we got it right!

FROM THE NEW FAMILY:

We thought you'd enjoy a few pictures of Trapper playing with Ernie, his new best friend. Ernie and Trapper are funny together, that's for sure!

He's awesome.... we love him!  Thanks!

For more touching, tear jerking, inspiring, funny, and tail wagging success stories - check out our Success Stories tab on the website. And if you have an RMLR Alumni Adoptee, send us an update! We'll get the new pictures up on the website (and into our hearts!!!)

Join Our Forever Family

One great thing about adopting a rescue dog is the sense of community that is developed through the rescuing of these sweet animals! There are transport coordinators that love to see happy pictures of the pup they pulled out of a dismal shelter on their last day - and foster parents that like to keep up to date with puppies they've fostered as they grow up! So we encourage you and your new pup to send us updates about your newest addition and we'll post them on our SUCCESS STORIES page!

The world wide-web provides us with these fantastic tools to keep in touch and grow as a Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue Forever Family! So use the following tools to keep up to date with events happening with RMLR and send us updates in return!

Congratulations C.A.R.E.

Many of you are aware that the dogs we have at RMLR come from all across the country. Most of the dogs come from the midwestern states of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Nebraska.
C.A.R.E. is the Colorado Animal Express. They are a volunteer run service that drives across these states and picks up cats and dogs from these high-kill shelters and drive them to
Colorado. The Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue, and many other Colorado rescues, benefit largely from this organization and their dedicated volunteers. C.A.R.E. just celebrated their 2 year
anniversary and were featured in BARK magazine. Check out this short write up from the founders!

On June 20, 2009, Colorado Animal Rescue Express (C.A.R.E.) celebrated its 2 year anniversary as a 501(C)(3). public charity.  During this period, we provided 4,338 animals (4,057 dogs
and 345 cats), with lifesaving transport from high kill shelters, owner surrenders, and puppymills in the Midwest.  Also, we started Jake's Fund in October 2008 and have helped 192
animals with spay/neuter or other medical services to prepare them for rescue.

Bark Magazine just posted an article about C.A.R.E. on their web site.  Please visit
http://thebark.com/content/have-van-will-travel and read more on our accomplishments and future plans.
While our main focus will remain transport and Jake's Fund, we will be working closely with our rescue contacts in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas on developing spay/neuter
programs in
their areas.  It is only through pet sterilization that the overpopulation problems will be eased. Thank you for your ongoing support and compassion for homeless dogs and cats.
