The Dog Days of Summer

As many of you are well aware, the dog days of summer are amongst us. "Dog days of summer" is a term that refers to the hottest days of the summer season. And with the triple digit temperatues and heat advisories we've been having in Central Colorado, I would definitely define this as the dog days. The term "Dog Days" was used by the Greeks, as well as the ancient Romans after Sirius (the "Dog Star" - not the XM radio), the brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun. The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before or at the same time as sunris. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather. The chocolate labs are thanking us right now for no longer practicing this tradition! Whatever the original usage, typically nowadays, it means it's hot outside.

July was a great month for everyone at the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue. We managed to successfully rescue and find families for 19 dogs! Three of which were harder than normal to find great families for: Coaco had surgery on both of her back legs, Mindy has hip dysplasia and is going to need surgery in the future, and Sadie Mae was our resident senior that is going blind. All three went to amazing families and we're so happy! We were happy to find new foster families in this past month. They're willing to help these fantastic dogs transistion from the confusion of shelters and long transports, to the loving caring stability of a forever home. There are also several new volunteers getting their feet wet and helping out in anyway possible! Thanks to the newbies for dedicating some of your valuable time to these pups. And as always thanks to all our volunteers and foster homes for their continued time and support! We couldn't do this without you!

This past weekend several of us took a night off and went to a comedy show. Not just any comedy show - we attended the benefit for C.A.R.E at Wits End Comedy Club. It was a lot of fun, very entertaining and raised some money for a great organization. For those of you not familiar with this organization, C.A.R.E. is a nonprofit weekly transport that drives across the midwest rescuing dogs and cats from high-kill shelters, bringing them to rescues in Colorado to find them good homes. They started only a little over a year ago and this past Saturday they announced that they had transported over 2,000 animals and over 40 different breeds. Chances are if you have adopted a dog from the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue that originated from Kansas or Missouri, C.A.R.E. had a large part in that dog's life. They do a fantastic dog and we're proud to support such a great organization!

August Dog of the Month: Raleigh

Hoooooowdy! My name is Raleigh. I'm looking for a best friend! And not just any 'best' friend... one that is actually going to be around forever! I am a lab mix (maybe Australian Shepard I've been told), 2 years old and 60 lbs. I love everyone! I really just want to hang out. I'm friendly and mellow. My puppy years are behind me. Just look at my great smile and bright eyes - you know I'm the one for you! My life has been pretty rough so far - my past "friends" weren't very nice. I've been neglected, abused, hit by a car and even shot. They left me outside, no matter what the temperature was - and do you know how cold it gets in Colorado?! It wasn't much fun. Luckily I was rescued by a nice lady and brought to the Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue. I'm with a fantastic foster family, but they say this isn't my forever family. So that's why I'm here - looking for someone to be my real forever friend, that will treat me nicer! Did I just say TREAT?! Interested?

Upcoming Events

Saturday August 9th 2008 at the PetCo in Northglenn - We'll be hosting an adoption event from NOON until 3PM. The store is at 450 East 120th in Northglenn, CO. We'll have a few dogs that are up for adoption and volunteers from the rescue with information about adopting the lab of your dreams!

Saturday September 6th 2008 is the SkirtChaser 5K in Denver. This is a nationwide series - it's HUGE! We have been chosen as the nonprofit partner for this race in Denver!! There is potential to raise a ton of money for the rescue through this partnership PLUS it'll be a ton of fun! Check out their video on the website. There are some things we need to do to help their cause - and there are things that you can do to help! ONE: run the race! Like to run? Love to run? And the winner gets $500! Sign up to run the race on September 6th in Denver on their website under Registration & Details. Following the race there is a happy-hour style party, complete with a skirt fashion show! TWO: In return for being the nonprofit partner, we need to provide a bunch of volunteers. We don't know how many yet - but there will be updates on our website as the date gets closer. It'll be a great time - and the exposure for the rescue will be incredible! So keep September 6th free on your calendar and either run the race or help support the pups of RMLR!!

Congratulations...

And finally congratulations to Robyn Wilson on winning a Week's Stay in Las Vegas! She was lucky enough to rescue a puppy from us a month ago - and now lucky enough to win a stay in Vegas. Hopefully some of that luck follows her there and wins her some money!
